A great performance by the team yesterday in Youghal, we started poorly and as in our last match against Cobh we turned into the back nine up in two matches and down in three. Our first pair Paudie Scanlon & Tom Higgins turned 3 up and went on to win 4 & 3. Denis Crowley & Colm Murphy turned 1 up and went on to win 3 & 2, Ned O'Flynn & Dave Fleming took a 2up lead midway through the back nine but were hauled to all square on 17th & then halved the 18th to par, they halved 19,& 20 & won with a birdie on the 21st. Tom Egan & Tom Barry turned 4 down and slipped to 5 down however they rallied losing out in the end by 3 & 2, Final pair Leo O'Mahony & John O'Grady came back from being 4 down to win their match with a brilliant par on the last hole, to give us a great win on a scoreline of 4 games to 1. Mar 2017: Fermoy Wins Gold .
International publication Destination Golf recently released its 2017 edition of Irelands Top 150 golf courses. All the courses are given a rating of Platinum, Gold or Silver. Fermoy along with five other courses in Munster (Doonbeg, Castlemartyr, Killarney (Killeen), Dundrum House and Ballybunion (Cashen) got a Gold rating. Kevin Markham, editor of Destination Golf and author of well-known golf publication “Hooked” summarises his experience of Fermoy. Fermoy is joyful, exuberant, unpretentious and exhilarating golf. As a country course, many golfers have not heard of it and would simply drive by as it doesn’t have the name or recognition required to turn heads. That’s a shame as Fermoy is all about the fun that makes golf such a wonderful game to play. Laced with attractive pine trees and a landscape that twists and buckles over hilly, heather-strewn terrain, the further into the round you go, the more you get the feeling of being tossed about like a boat in a squall. The front nine have some sweet elevations, making the most of them with smart tee box and green settings, while the back nine offer views over countryside and some deep rolling chasms. It may not have the smart frills of Ireland’s glamorous courses, but spend a day at Fermoy and you will enjoy the adventure. This is a fantastic achievement by the club and one that Staff, Management and members is very proud of. It was not that long ago that the club was hit badly by Storm Darwin (Feb-2014) and lost four hundred trees which required huge work by staff and volunteers jointly. Goes to show hard work does pay off, Fermoy take a bow.
